The basic golf swing is considered to be completely about physics, and so when you are trying to learn the basic golf swing you need to realize that you will have to learn a bit about physics as well. If you have ever been on a golf course and you have tried to use all of your strength in the basic golf swing so that you can hit the ball as far as possible, then you surely must have realized that this simply does not work.


Don’t Expect to Master the Basic Golf Swing Overnight


Apart from the correlation with physics, you need to realize that you will need to look very carefully in regards to the way that your golf clubs are designed. You can make a powerful swing only from exercised and conditioned muscles that are applied in a controlled and relaxed manner. Only then can you drive the ball in the right direction, as well as drive it far enough so that you can keep your scores low.


Everyone who is involved in golf really needs to know that you cannot simply go out there and be as good as the professionals. Rather it will take a lot of time, effort, and patience in order to improve your golf game. It is all about practice, and so the more time that you can devote to it, the better your game will be as a result. In fact, the entire golf swing movement can be effective only if you have made sure to stretch your golf muscles, have weight trained by used dumbbells so that you can get your muscles worked out and ready to go for the next time you play golf.


A lot of people do not realize how truly important it is to be in good shape in order to improve your basic golf swing. Many people seem to think that because it does not necessarily look like an incredibly active sport, that you do not have to be physically fit. They consider it to be a sport for retired professionals or for a lazy way to spend a weekend afternoon or for business executives to strike a deal on the greens. This is completely untrue; you just do not notice the movements that the body is making as much, but in golf you are using a lot of energy and so you certainly do need to be in good shape.

One Basic Golf Swing Grip at a Time

I would like to focus the jest of this article on the basis golf swing… the grip. With spring in the air and golf on our minds let’s get this year off to a good start by not overlooking the basics.



Unquestionably the biggest mistake I see in people’s golf swing isn’t in their basic golf swing itself. Nope. Not at all.



More often than not the mistakes happen before the basic golf swing even begins. The first mistake is made in how the golfer holds the golf club. After that the next mistake usually comes in with how they stand up to the ball. Poor posture. Then after having two strikes against them, they then finish the job of making it almost impossible to hit a good golf shot by improperly lining up to their intended target.


Of course, after hitting several (possibly several hundred) balls with only a minute few being what they think is acceptable the tired frustrated golfer asks… what am I doing wrong with my basic golf swing?



For this purpose, I want to discuss the very first part of the proper golf swing … the golf grip. In fact, let’s be even more precise here; the left hand grip on the golf club. Oh sure… there’s much more than just the grip including the aforementioned posture and alignment. But there’s only so much typing I can do at one time so let’s stay with the grip for this communication.



The position of your club face is greatly influenced by your grip. And this is especially true as your club face enters the impact zone and contacts the ball. Certainly there is an abundance of golf swing peccadillo’s that can occur that can cause those woeful golf shots. You know the ones I’m talking about: the banana ball, the smothered hook, skied, skulled, and chili dipped. Ok, I’ll stop… If you’ll stop trying to correct your basic golf swing by in incessantly hitting ball after ball trying to make every physical adjustment known to man (and some that aren’t) within your golf swing itself and begin by using a fundamentally sound grip.


So you’re going to continue on with me… great! Let’s talk about the left hand (right handed golfers) first and foremost.



The left had should come in contact with the grip of the club in such a manner that the grip cuts a diagonal across the palm of the left hand from the crook in the index finger down and across to the bottom right pad of the left hand.



When you close your left hand, your club should be held in the first to fingers and your palm.



The key that you look for out of your left had grip is quite simple. As you address your ball and look down, you should only see two knuckles of your left hand. As an instructor standing directly across from you, I too should only see the same. If I don’t see EXACTLY two knuckles of your left hand then we take a step back and re-grip until we get it right. And don’t try to cheat and re-grip club just as you begin to take the golf club away and into your back swing. FOUL I say. And I will stop you.



Ok. I certainly haven’t given you that much to remember here. But seriously golfers, resign yourself to go through a quick, short checklist before you begin the journey we call the golf swing. Start with your grip. Get used to it. A proper grip will feel awkward to you particularly if your grip has been way off. Stay with it. Know that it’s the right way to grip the golf club. Piece by piece let’s lay the foundation for a basic good swing.

Naturally, one of the best and quickest ways to make your swing better is through plenty of practice. Although there are a lot of good tips in many of the books and videos nothing compares to practice as the best way to improve your basic golf swing.

On the whole, the more you practice the better you will eventually become, of course if you are doing the basic golf swing wrong then it won't help to practice other than to give you the experience to improve. There is very little point in just trying a new system of improving your basic golf swing and then, in the event it doesn't work, moving on to the next thing. Trying to improve your golf game in this manner will not allow you to see the benefits that real practice and dedication can bring. All professional golfers know that the main thing that will improve their game is practice. It is no different for the average golfer. A lot of the books and videos that show you how to improve your golf swing will advocate the idea of practice makes perfect and to be honest many of them give you very similar advice, after all there are only so many ways that you can swing a golf club.

If you get some good instruction on your basic golf swing to make sure that you have it right then you can really improve your swing best by practicing. You will get to see where you can improve and what to do if you are not playing at your best. Although this does not seem to be a simple as the books and videos say it should be, at least you know that with hard work and dedication your golf game will continue to improve by getting better and better and that you will have achieved this yourself.

All professional golfers are very effective at using "elastic muscle energy". Like a large rubber band, muscles actually have an elastic quality to them, allowing them to snap back like a stretched rubber band. This elastic muscle energy allows them to exert much more force than possible during normal muscle contractions. It makes their swing movements look smooth and explosive. Elastic muscle energy comes from a muscle wanting to snap back to its original length after being stretched. This elastic energy, triggered by little stretch receptors located in the muscle, and elastic qualities of the tissue, are stored as "potential energy" in the muscle. This potential energy can be used to increase the amount of force the muscle produces. However, this stored energy must be used immediately or it will be lost as heat. The secret to using elastic energy is to coordinate the nervous and muscle contraction systems to work with the muscle stored energy. After the stretch, the muscles must be turned on instantly to take advantage of the muscles recoil. Developing elasticity in movement can be difficult. In general, when doing sports movements, begin with the legs so that your legs can get an elastic recoil with your upper body. The golf swing, with its strong rotational movement has power generated from the legs causing their upper body to whip through the motion like a slingshot. Effective use of elastically requires the trained eye or a good computerized motion analysis system. Next time you watch professional golf on TV, watch them closely and try to emulate their movements.
